Specimen: EDTA Whole Blood
The reticulocyte count is a measure of the number of immature red blood cells (called reticulocytes) in a sample of blood. Reticulocytes are produced by the bone marrow and eventually mature into fully functional red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body. The reticulocyte count is typically used to evaluate bone marrow function and to monitor the body's response to anemia treatment. A low reticulocyte count may indicate decreased bone marrow function or a deficiency in iron, vitamin B12, or folate. On the other hand, a high reticulocyte count may indicate increased production of red blood cells in response to anemia or blood loss. The normal range for reticulocyte count varies depending on factors such as age, sex, and altitude, but generally falls within the following ranges: Adults: 0.5% to 2.5% Newborns: 2% to 6% Infants: 1% to 4% Children: 0.5% to 2.5% It's important to note that the interpretation of reticulocyte count results should be done by a qualified medical professional.
