Specimen: EDTA Whole Blood
The total leukocyte count, also known as the white blood cell count, is a measure of the number of white blood cells in a sample of blood. White blood cells are part of the body's immune system and play a role in fighting infections and other diseases. The normal range for total leukocyte count can vary depending on factors such as age, sex, and health status, but generally falls within the following ranges: Adults: 4,000 to 11,000 cells per microliter (mcL) of blood Children: 5,000 to 13,000 cells/mcL of blood A low leukocyte count, called leukopenia, may indicate conditions such as bone marrow failure, viral infections, or autoimmune diseases. A high leukocyte count, called leukocytosis, may indicate conditions such as bacterial infections, inflammation, or certain types of cancer. It's important to note that the interpretation of total leukocyte count results should be done by a qualified medical professional, and other factors such as the differential white blood cell count and the patient's overall health status should also be taken into account.
