Specimen: EDTA Whole Blood

The platelet count is a measure of the number of platelets in a sample of blood. Platelets are small cell fragments that play a key role in blood clotting. The normal range for platelet count can vary depending on factors such as age, sex, and health status, but generally falls within the following ranges: Adults: 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter (mcL) of blood Children: 150,000 to 450,000 platelets/mcL of blood A low platelet count, called thrombocytopenia, may indicate conditions such as bone marrow disorders, viral infections, or autoimmune diseases. Thrombocytopenia can also be caused by medications or be a side effect of certain medical treatments. A low platelet count can lead to an increased risk of bleeding and bruising. A high platelet count, called thrombocytosis, may indicate conditions such as cancer, inflammation, or infection. Thrombocytosis can also be a side effect of certain medications or medical treatments. A high platelet count can increase the risk of blood clots. It's important to note that the interpretation of platelet count results should be done by a qualified medical professional, and other factors such as the patient's overall health status and other blood tests should also be taken into account.
