Specimen: Urine

The urine albumin test is a measure of the amount of albumin, a protein, in a person's urine. The test is used to detect early signs of kidney damage or disease. The normal range for urine albumin is less than 30 milligrams per gram (mg/g) of creatinine. A high urine albumin level, called albuminuria, may indicate conditions such as kidney disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart failure. Albuminuria can also be caused by certain medications, infections, or a high protein diet. The urine sugar test, also known as a urine glucose test, is used to measure the level of glucose, or sugar, in a person's urine. The test is used to monitor blood sugar levels in people with diabetes or to detect gestational diabetes during pregnancy. The normal range for urine sugar is negative, which means that no sugar is present in the urine. A high urine sugar level, called glucosuria, may indicate high blood sugar levels, which can be a sign of diabetes or gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Glucosuria can also be caused by certain medications or liver disease.
